We are only seven weeks into 2014 and there has been so much on in and around the Geelong region, it has been fantastic.  But the fun isn’t over yet, once again this weekend is going to be huge with some great events coming to Geelong.

 

The Western Bulldogs play the Saints
Wednesday February 19th 2014
The AFL’s NAB Challenge comes to Skilled Stadium at Kardinia Park on Wednesday night, this time the Western Bulldogs take on the St Kilda Saints. St Kilda will debut several new faces to the clash and the Bulldogs have named a strong side with Matthew Boyd, Adam Cooney and Tom Liberatore all picked to play. It will be a strange sight not seeing the mighty Cats run out on the park but promises to be an exciting match nevertheless.

 

Nightjar  
Friday February 21st 2014
The third of four Nightjars take place in Johnstone Park on Friday Night. Night Jar is part festival and part market and has been hugely successful in its first two weeks.  Located under among the lush grass and shady palm trees the Nightjar has been the place to be on Friday nights, with some interesting craft inspired stores, incredible entertainment and some of the tastiest food going around, get down there this Friday and enjoy.  The family friendly fun starts from 4:00 PM and continues through until around 10:00 PM.  Read More

 

The 2014 Diversitat  Pako Festa
Saturday 22nd February 2014
Geelong’s biggest multicultural celebration returns to Pakington Street on Saturday starting back in 1983 it has become one of the city’s favourite events.  The colourful and vibrant parade kicks off at 11:00 AM followed by a day of music, dance, food and family fun. The Great Eastern Beach Paddle
Saturday 22nd February 2014
Designed for paddlers of all ages the Great Eastern Beach Paddle is a fund raiser for Reclink Australia. The event consists of a six kilometre kayak paddle from Eastern Beach to Limeburner’s Point and back.   The paddle kicks off at 9:00 AM after an earlier briefing and registration commences from 7:30 AM.  The event will see prizes and giveaway and plenty of fun for all ages and different paddling ability.. Colac Otway Relay for Life
Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd of February 2014
Saturday and Sunday will see a mammoth fund raising effort for the Cancer Council, the 2014 Colac Otway Relay for life.  This event will kick of at 2:45 PM on Saturday at the Colac Show Grounds with an Opening Ceremony followed by over 25 teams and participating overnight in the event. A stunning candlelight ceremony will take place on Saturday evening at 8:30PM and there will be a closing ceremony on Sunday morning at 9:00AM marking the end of the event.  For more information:  http://www.relayforlife.org.au/

 

Music in the Gardens
Sunday 23rd February 2014
This Sunday Geelong’s beautiful botanical gardens will host some of the coolest tunes going around with the Hip Cats playing the next installment of Music in the Gardens. Pack yourself a picnic (but remember no glass) and enjoy a wonderful evening of music. Gates open at 4:00 PM and the evening starts at 5:00 PM and tickets are available at GPAC or at the gate and kids under 15 are free.

 

Thompson Football Club – Family Fun Day
Sunday 23rd February 2014
The Thompson Footy Club are putting on a great day of fun with live music, kids activities like a jumping castle and face painting, an auction even a sausage sizzle. Visitors are asked to come with crazy hair to show their support for the World’s Greatest Shave. The day will raise money for the Leukemia Foundation’s event and Still I Rise Foundation, two very worthy causes to get behind. The Thompson Football Club can be found off Breakwater Road in East Geelong / Thompson.

 

My Fair Lady
Friday 21st -Sunday 23rd February 2014
Footlight Productions has been presenting the classic play My Fair Lady at GPAC throughout February. The last three shows are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week at the Playhouse Theatre. The musical first hit the Broadway stage back in 1956 and has been a hit ever since, and was even adapted into a film staring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison in the mid 1960’s. This is the first time this play has been performed in Geelong for over 16 years and comes back with an big cast of local talent. For more information www.gpac.org.au

 

Raw Comedy
Saturday 22nd February 2014
Raw Comedy is responsible for discovering some of the biggest names in Australian comedy including Chris Lilley, Hannah Gadsby, Will Anderson, Peter Hillier, Josh Thomas and world acclaimed Tim Minchin just to name a few. This event gives local comics or a chance to try their stuff in front of an audience with the winner going into a state final and hopefully progressing to the national grand final that is part of the 2014 Melbourne Comedy Festival. This event on Saturday night will feature Adam Rozenbach a popular Melbourne comic as compare, you might remember him from stints on Spicks and Specs and other comedy shows on TV or with Lindy Burns on ABC’s 774 radio program. Almost Maine
20th – 22nd February 2014
Almost Maine is a performance written by John Cariani and directed by Kelly Clifford set in a remote mythical town. The story traces residents who find them seleves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. This performance has been running over February at the Woodbin Theatre in West Geelong. Its last shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. For more information: www.gpac.org.au

 

Shelford Duck Race
Sunday 23rd February 2014
The small township of Shelford to the west of Geelong will host the annual Shelford Community Duck Race & Community Day on the Shelford Oval on Sunday the 23rd. The day sees a huge festival on the oval, with market stalls, food, drink and plenty of fun including rides for the young and even Harley rides. The highlight of the day is at 3:30 PM when the rubber duckies are let loose in the river for the race. The day starts at 11:00 AM and there will be some great entertainment including Melbourne based singer, Luke Legs.
