2017 Geelong Highland Gathering.
After a sensational event in 2016 at Corio’s Goldworthy Reserve, the Geelong Highland Gathering returns to the ground for their 2017 event on Sunday the 19th of March.
The Geelong Highland Gathering is one of Australia’s longest running events dating back to 1857 when it was organised by the local ‘Commun Na Feinne” society. A far cry from what is now regarded as one of Australia’s best Scottish celebrations.
This year the Highland Gathering promises to be fantastic with a full day of music, food, dance and ceremony taking place. Some of Victoria’s best pipe band swill be attending with their haunting pipes and deep bass drums.
Dancing will take place all day with a huge competition of highland and Scottish country dancing.
Surrounding the Goldsworthy Reserve running track will be the clans, expect to see many of the big Scottish families represented, many with interesting history on show or a range of goods.
Market stalls will also be selling a wide range of Scottish souvenirs, there will be tartan, plush Scottish Dogs, jewelry, books and a range of Celtic products.
The strong men will also be out in force at the Heavy Games, here the caber toss, hammer throw and shot putt will be popular spectator events.
The Scottish Dogs will also be back at this years event,with some of the most adorable hounds and pooches on display.
Food lovers are in for a treat, expect plenty of Scottish delicacies including haggis, black pudding, beautiful shortcake that can all be washed down with the ever popular Irn Bru soft drink.
Be sure to catch the opening ceremony that is a blaze of colour and music with the highlight being the amazing 42nd Royal Highland Regiment’s appearance in their incredible red uniforms.
