Its racing season and Geelong’s biggest day on the social calendar takes place on Wednesday the 24th of October with the running of the 2018 Geelong Cup.
First ran in 1872, the 2400 meter Group 3 Geelong Cup runs at 4:00 PM and is a great indication of who to watch in the Melbourne Cup a fortnight later. Over recent years many of the cup’s winners have done extremely well on the first Tuesday of November there has even been a few that have taken out both races including Americain, Dunaden and Media Puzzle.
The horse racing is only one part of the day, the day is a social celebration where people dress up in their finest and head to the boxes, marques or overlooking the track to enjoy a day of dining, socializing and people watching while enjoying the odd beer or champagne.
Fashions on the field is another of the day’s highlights where some of our best dressed men and women battle it out for the cherished title. The competition as fierce on the cat walk as it is on the race track.
The Geelong racecourse is a hive of activity and a fantastic atmosphere on cup day especially around the the bookies and TAB facilities where people try their best to pick a winner. Roaming entertainment and and a special precinct called Little Geelong also make the day more fun.
There are plenty of different packages and deals on offer including transportation, dining, marques and so on from both the race club and some of the pubs and clubs around our city.
