ANZAC Day 2014
This year ANZAC day marks the 99th anniversary of our troops landing on the Turkish shore of Gallipoli in what has now become our nation’s most solemn day day of remembrance.
Today Australia and New Zealand stops not only to remember the ANZACs but all our armed forces who have served our two countries in times of war and times of peace.
The Geelong region has some very fitting ceremonies to commemorate ANZAC Day here are a few, if you know of any more, please let us know so we can spread the information.
Johnstone Park and Geelong city precinct
Johnstone Park is the centrepiece of many of Geelong’s commemorations. The day starts early with a wreath laying ceremony at the Geelong Peace Memorial from 4:15 AM.
The magnificent St Mary’s of the Angels Basilica will host the Annual Commemorative Mass from 9:00 AM.
11:00 AM sees a parade of service people, community groups, marching bands and historic war time vehicles parade along Malop Street to Johnstone Park where the major Commemorative Service is held.
Norlane
The RSL in Rose Avenue Norlane will be holding a march from the Melbourne Road corner at Sparks Road to the RSL followed by what is always a very moving wreath laying ceremony and service. The march starts at 9:30 AM
Belmont
There will be a wreath laying ceremony at the RSL on Barwon Heads road in Belmont from 9:30 AM
Torquay
The Torquay dawn service at Point Danger has become one of the biggest commemorations in recent years. Thousands turn out at 6:00 AM in what are usually cold and windy conditions to pay tribute and remember those so have sacrificed so much. This is a magnificent ceremony overlooking the ocean as the sun slowly rises in the east.
Portarlington
The Portarlington & St Leonards RSL located in Harding Street Portarlington will be holding their dawn service from 6:00AM this will be followed by a march at 11:00 AM from the RSL to Parks Hall.
Barwon Heads & Ocean Grove
5:50 AM will see a piper call to arms at the Ocean Grove Park followed by a ceremony at the Ocean Grove War Memorial in the park. There will be a wreath laying ceremony and march along Hitchcock and Bridge Streets finishing at a ceremony at the Barwon Heads RSL.
At 10:00 AM a march will take place in Ocean Grove along the Terrace to the Cenotaph in the Ocean Grove Park followed by a wreath laying ceremony.
Drysdale
A march will travel from the Drysdale Primary School to the Drysdale War Memorial from 10:00 AM.
Anglesea
A march will begin at 9:30 AM from the corner of Noble Street and Great Ocean Road followed by a service in the RSL Hall in Murray Street.
Winchelsea
Winchelsea’s ANZAC day commemorations will be held in Eastern Reserve at 11:00 AM on Hopkins Street.
Lorne
Lorne will hold a dawn service from 7:30 AM at the Epitaph in the reserve followed by a march from the Senior Citizen’s to the Epitaph from 11:30 AM.
Queenscliff
A dawn service will take place from 5:45 AM overlooking the ocean at Hesse Street near the fort. A march from Hesse Street to Fort Queenscliff will take place at 10:40 AM followed by a service at the fort from 11:00AM
Point Lonsdale
Point Lonsdale will commemorate this day with a moving service and march at the Point Lonsdale Cenotaph from 8:30 AM.
