Sunday March 4th will see the return of the fantastic Wallington Strawberry Fair at the Wallington Primary School in the heart of the Bellarine.
The Strawberry Fair takes place each year in the delightful rolling hills of Wallington, located on the Bellarine Peninsula just off the road Wallington—Ocean Grove Road It is an area rich with fruit producers including strawberry fields and apple orchards.
The strawberry industry in Wallington itself dates back over 130 years. In 1881 when the Wallington Hotel was offered for sale, it was noted that “several acres of strawberries of assorted varieties as well as 3000 fruit trees were included in the sale.”
Plates of strawberries and cream for sixpence a plate were served at the hotel in 1884. These strawberries were the produce of 5 acres of red and white strawberries grown at the hotel.
At the Wallington Strawberry Fair, temptations lure you from all directions, each strawberry more succulent than the last. Chocolate dipped strawberries, fresh strawberries on pancakes, scones, strawberries and cream and of course the jars of strawberry jam to take home. A variety of culinary fare is on offer, including a BBQ, Gourmet food and wine.
Pick up a bargain from the many craft stalls, from a fine piece of crafted turned wood to a fairy costume or a large bunch of bright flowers. Let the children be entertained on the rides. Tame the ponies or ride the giant slide or chair o plane. Listen to sounds of local bands and check out all the displays.
