Buckley’s Falls

Buckleys FallsLocated on the Barwon River in Geelong, Buckley’s Falls is a breathtaking natural wonder that offers a serene escape for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. Situated upstream from Queen’s Park, this natural wonder is formed by a series of terraced rock formations. On weekends, these terraces transform into playgrounds for the people of Geelong, attracting many fishermen and hikers. The area offers not just natural beauty, but also historical significance.

On the Fyansford side of the river, you’ll find a historic papermill that opened in 1878. This mill played a crucial role in the region’s industrial history. To provide power for the mill, a weir and water race were constructed above the falls in 1876. The water race directed the river’s flow to the mill, harnessing the energy needed for its operations. The overflow from the water race once created spectacular cascades back into the Barwon River, particularly after heavy rains. However, this impressive sight is now rare, as the water race has become overgrown over the years.

Today, the revitalized papermill precinct offers a unique blend of tourism attractions, retail therapy, wellness and cultural experiences. Covering nearly 5,000 square metres of building space, the site is home to over several businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, and homewares shop. Additionally, several independent artisans have established private studios, making it a hub of creativity and culture. The revitalisation of the papermill adds unique charm to the area, offering something for everyone.

The name Buckley’s Falls comes from William Buckley, a legendary convict who escaped custody in 1804. After his escape, he travelled around the bay and was accepted by the local Aboriginal tribe. Buckley spent time living in caves around the falls and lived among the Aboriginals for 32 years. His remarkable journey took a turn when he stumbled upon explorer John Batman’s camp at Point Lonsdale.

Buckley’s extensive knowledge of the area proved invaluable to the new settlers, who relied on him as an interpreter and guide. His legacy endures in Australian vernacular with phrases like “Buckley’s Hope” or “Buckley’s Chance,” both tributes to his extraordinary survival and integration into Aboriginal society.

Whether you’re drawn by the scenic beauty, historical intrigue, or the chance for a leisurely weekend outing, Buckley’s Falls is a destination rich in natural splendor and cultural heritage.
