The Docklands precinct is Melbourne’s newest playground. Nearly halfway through a 20+ year construction phase the precinct is Melbourne’s waterfront suburb.
The Docklands Marvel Stadium is the southern hemispheres largest indoor stadium. Seating over 50,000 people with a movable roof the stadium plays host to the AFL football and many international sports including soccer, rugby and cricket. Docklands Stadium has also played host to many of the worlds biggest musical artists, in its first 3 years Kiss, Barbra Streisand, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Robbie Williams and Bruce Springsteen have all played to huge crowds.
The waterfront precinct is home to huge high rise apartment complexes, when finished will house tens of thousands of residents in this waterfront city.
Some of the most creative modern cafes and bars have sprung up along the docklands waterfront and huge retail complexes and entertainment districts are under construction.
The area is well serviced by watercraft, ferries and the free city loop tram which takes visitors right to Dockland’s doorstep from most points of the city. Recent additions to the Docklands precinct include the huge Southern Star Observation Wheel which has had several technical issues and is currently undergoing some major repairs. Costco the huge US based bulk retail warehouse has also opened bringing their first Australian store to the area. Over the coming months other huge new additions will include ANZ Bank’s head office complex brining thousands more workers to Docklands.
There is no better place in Melbourne to enjoy a cool drink on a balmy night than in one of the bars in the docklands complex. There are some of Melbourne’s best dining experiences, with a multitude of styles to try many offering spectacular views of the waterfront. If you aren’t looking for a dining experience and just want to kick back with some takeaway or fresh fish and chips there are several small eateries and food courts. Something for everyone.
Many new events and activities are now taking place in the Dockland’s precinct. Yacht racing, Dance Parties, Sporting events and festivals are all making this area one of Melbourne’s new jewels.
