The Otways probably has Victoria’s most diverse fishing with open oceans, bays, inlets, river mouths and beautiful streams there is so much choise and so many different ways to fish and types to catch.
As much of the Otways is protected by National Park or Marine Park it is important before heading out to check the rules and regulations on where and what you can fish, and always check to see that you have a valid fishing license. They can be purchased from your local fishing or sports store.
Many anglers enjoy fishing the beautiful Gellibrand River; the upper waters have trout and blackfish which are both a good catch. Fly fishing is very popular as is just sitting back relaxing on the river bank.
The Aire River is a very popular place for bream fishing with good catches being regally reported, while the Barham River also reports good fishing.
Offshore popular locations include Wild Dog Beach where salmon fishing is popular and plenty of mullet action is also had at Johanna Beach where snapper are also a popular catch.
The Lorne Pier and Apollo Bay pier are also great places for whiting, salmon, squid, mullet and even garfish. Louttit Bay also record good catches of salmon, squid and barracoutta. While towards Kennett River and Wye River bream, barracouta and mullet are very popular catches. Artillery Rocks which is about half way between Lorne and Kennett River is very popular for rock fishing with reports of pinkies, sweep and flathead being regularly caught.
There are several commercial tourist operators in our seaside towns like Lorne and Apollo Bay which offer fishing charters which are a great way to fish in our seas. These operators are a great idea as they have all the equipment you need and are experienced in sometimes dangerous waters.
