Saturday the 8th of October saw Geelong’s parklands and city centre come to life in a blaze of light and colour for the 2022 White Light Festival. Back after a four year hibernation, the event attracted tens of thousands of people in what was a chilly evening to take part and enjoy the incredible displays.
Highlights of the night that ran from sunset until 1AM included some amazing artwork being projected in vivid colour onto the Geelong city Hall, Art Gallery and other locations around the city. The City Hall display featured some stunning first nation artwork and was accompanied by a fitting soundtrack to add to the wonderful atmosphere. The highlight for many visitors was the Guardian, a mythical beast that was part lion and part monster that’s stunning crystal shards glistened in the light as the creature roared and moved slowly along the waterfront precinct. Another of the major attractions, a monstrous blow up sculpture called Shine, this part skeleton doll and dog designed by Ariana, was a stunning sight as it gazed along the length of Gheringhap Street.
Geelong’s White Night festival is part of three White Night festivals that have been held in Victoria this year, with the others being held in the region centres of Shepparton and Bendigo. It is hoped the festival will return to Geelong next year for another magnificent display of light, music and art.
