Lorne is about an hours drive from Geelong along the Surf Coast Highway and Great Ocean Road. The road is windy in places and can be busy particularly on sunny weekends, but the spectacular view certainly makes up for any hold ups on the road. Another popular way is ’the back way’ this route takes the C151 Deans Marsh to Lorne Road through the beautiful forests of the Otways and meets the Princes Highway (Colac to Geelong Road) at Winchelsea. The trip takes a little longer but there are rarely delays and the driving is a bit easier, a very good alternative route on a busy day, and makes a good change of scenery on the way home.
A bus service links Geelong Railway Station with Lorne and major towns along the Surfcoast and Great Ocean Road.
Lorne’s main business precinct is on Mount Joy Parade which is actually the Great Ocean Road or B100, one side is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants while the other side the foreshore reserve backing onto the beautiful beach. Most of the residents live in the hills behind the Great Ocean Road many with spectacular views of the coastline.
