Just along from the Portarlington foreshore and overlooking Port Philip Bay at Point Richards you will find one of the Bellarine Peninsula’s more unique attractions; The Portarlington Miniature Railway. This minute railway is a project of the Rotary Club and GSMEE and operates on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month from November to April and also is available for hire. (Subject to hot and inclement weather conditions) The small circuit runs a diesel and stem powered miniature locomotives and are a huge hit particularly with the young.
The railway began in 1999 after a dedicated group of engineers and volunteers built the locomotives over hundreds of hours in the preceding years. There is a kilometre of track including platform and railway signals it is really quite amazing. Proceeds from tickets sold on the railway are distributed evenly between further enhancing and upkeep of the railway and several charities on the Bellarine Peninsula.
The railway can be found near the Port Richards Boat ramp, there are plenty of BBQ and picnic facilities and a nice sandy foreshore nearby to enjoy a great day out on the Bellarine Peninsula.
